An defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret information in any cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
